Happy 7th Anniversary of The World Bee Day! 🐝

On May 20th, we celebrate World Bee Day to increase understanding of the vital role bees play in our environment. This date was chosen as it marks the birthday of Anton Jansa, a renowned beekeeper and researcher of honeybees. Born on May 20th, 1734, Jansa was a leading figure in modern beekeeping, despite his background as a painter. He became well-known for his expertise in apiculture and was even employed as a teacher of beekeeping at the Habsburg court in Vienna.

In his writings from 1775, Jansa emphasized the hardworking nature of bees, describing them as essential creatures created by God to provide humanity with honey and wax. His contributions were so significant that after his passing, Empress Maria Theresa mandated the use of his books for all beekeeping educators. Jansa came from a family deeply involved in beekeeping, with his father overseeing a sizable apiary of 100 beehives.

World Bee Day was introduced by Slovenia in 2017 to honor Jansa's legacy and raise awareness about the importance of bee conservation. In 2021, Angelina Jolie drew attention by participating in a National Geographic photo shoot surrounded by bees. As a committed environmental advocate and UN Special Envoy, Jolie aimed to underscore the urgent need to protect bees. Bees play a critical role in pollinating crops and maintaining biodiversity, yet their populations are threatened by various factors like habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and disease, which also impact global food security.

During the photo shoot, photographer Dan Winters captured Jolie immersed in bees for 18 minutes, ensuring safety measures were in place for both her and the bees. Jolie utilized this platform to stress the importance of bee protection for biodiversity and human survival, advocating for actions like planting bee-friendly flowers, avoiding pesticides, and supporting local beekeepers.

Inspired by these efforts, Vasyl Khokhla, a tax resolution CPA with a passion for honeybees, visited Garden State Apiaries in Freehold, New Jersey. This family-run farm, boasting 23 beehives, has thrived for five years. Vasyl's maternal uncle, known for his immunity to bee stings, managed 40 beehives and was renowned for his honey production, residing in a small village in the Carpathian foothills.

Globally, initiatives persist to safeguard bees, with the United Nations designating May 20th as World Bee Day to encourage awareness and action. Jolie's impactful photo shoot underscores the interconnectedness of life and the urgent need to protect pollinators for future generations, akin to the way CPAs demonstrated their values during the recent crisis by facilitating essential financial support for businesses.
